A directory of exhibitors who intentionally show films on film to the public — cinemas, movie theaters, festivals, museums, and itinerant groups.

Directory of Analog Film Exhibitors: Project Description

Since 2013, we have been cataloging exhibitors of analog film. Today, the directory includes exhibitors who show a mix of film and digital and exhibitors who only occasionally show film, as well as exhibitors who show 16mm or other small gauge film but not 35mm. The directory attempts to only include exhibitors who have at least screened film in the past year or so (sometimes longer, in the case of festivals or venues with more occasional film schedules), and excludes venues that have equipment that has been decommissioned or is essentially never used. It is continually being updated.

The intention of the project is to document the wide array of exhibition settings for analog film around the world, to provide a practical resource for filmgoers hoping to view films in these formats, and to assist filmmakers, archives, and film distributors in researching potential venues for their work.

Below is the public version of the directory, but our research on most of these exhibitors is more detailed than what is available here. We hope to eventually build a freestanding website for this project, but for now Sprocket School is its home.

  • The directory is constantly revised as new information becomes available (see revision history), but things change fast in filmland so some information may be out of date. We welcome corrections.
